Exhibition “Art and Activism: Angry, Irreverent, and Sexy Innovation in Response to the AIDS Crisis” will be on display in the BUAM Lindsay Study Room, December 1–9, 2023. Opening reception 5-6pm December 1.

The exhibit showcases how queer communities can respond to epidemics, helping us rethink how art is not only a form of political activism but also a provocative, engaging tool for education and prevention. The art and artifacts in this exhibition begin with a conversation about how the gay community in New York City responded to the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s.

The artwork produced during this era ranged from irreverent, caustic, and satirical to erotic, sexual, and playful, aiming to destigmatize not only HIV/AIDS but also homosexuality and casual sex.

All works courtesy of Sean Massey’s personal collection and Sean Massey’s Gay Men’s Health Crisis Collection.
