Yogurt-Making Destress Event

Unwind before finals by making yogurt from scratch!

Using various strains of bacteria cultures, we made mesophilic bacteria with milk.

Dr. Alex Dainis:

Alex Dainis is a freelance science communicator and video producer with eight years of experience producing digital, educational content for the web. Her background includes a PhD in genetics from Stanford University, and she was honored to be a 2019 Jackson Wild Media Lab Fellow. Her long-running YouTube channel brings biology and genetics to over 40,000 subscribers and her science communication efforts have reached millions of viewers across multiple social media platforms. Now based in Los Angeles, CA, she has created Helicase Media LLC to focus on bringing humanity and storytelling to science via online media.

Marco:

Marco is a natural farmer and entrepreneur who uses microbiology concepts to enhance soil and maximize plant growth! His business focuses on selling microorganism solutions and nutrients as well as other things you need for your garden. The intersection of environmentalism and microbiology really captivated me. He has a really interesting and educational instagram everyone should check out that sent me and Kristie down a rabbit hole and now our parents are in for a huge surprise when we come back home and dig up their yard to plant a natural garden!

The Science of Skincare with Dr. Kathryn Cherny

Dr. Kathryn Cherny received her Ph.D from Binghamton University in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Microbiology. While working at Sephora Dr. Cherny formd the ideas of what would become her skincare company: microBELLA cosmetics. Using her knowledge of research she created what she describes as "kombucha for your face" with microbiology ideals and science.

During this webinar Dr. Cherny talks about the philosophy of her company and why she focuses microBELLA research on the microbiota of the face, as well as opportunities in Binghamton students should take advantage of that allowed her to start her company.

All About Biofilms with Dr. Light

During this presentation the Microbiology Club  (2020-2021) secretary Kathleen Lu gave a presentation on what Biofilms are, why everyone should care about them, and how you can get involved with biofilms research on campus. 2020-2021 president Renate Gerstenberger talked a little about her experience researching biofilms in Binghamton University's SRI program. After this, Dr. Light gave a presentation about her journey becoming a researcher and how she got to where she is today.

Dr. Light received her Ph.D in cell/molecular biology, Microbiology from Binghamton University in 2017. She is currently a research assistant professor, first-year research immersion program  (FRI) and assistant director, summer research immersion program (SRI) at Binghamton University.

Virtual Shadowing and Volunteer Hours

During this presentation the Microbiology Club  (2020-2021) went over opportunities students have for volunteering and shadowing during the covid-19 crisis.

Eboard members Renate Gerstenberger and Kristie Chan went over volunteering websites and phone apps as well as where to find virtual shadowing, how to keep track of your hours, and eboard applications for the 2021-22 school year.
