HEARTSafe Campuses are recognized by the National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation(NCEMSF) and the American Heart Association (AHA). Harpur's Ferry goal, since2013, is to maintain and enhance Binghamton's participation in this effort to," encourage and promote community awareness of the potential for saving the lives of sudden cardiac arrest victims through the use of CPR". Educating and empowering both students and faculty is a vital link in the chain of survival. Effective hands-only CPR and defibrillation performed by a bystander, prior to the arrival of EMS, is vital to the chances of survival.
Binghamton University is a HEARTSafe campus and this event lets members of the Binghamton University community learn compression-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). This will allow for early recognition of sudden cardiac arrest, knowledge of what to do when cardiac arrest occurs, training of community members in CPR and an increase in public access to defibrillation.
