EOP student AntaTall

Student advocates for continued support of EOP

Since 1968, the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at Binghamton University has been making higher education possible for disadvantaged students through advocacy as well as academic, financial, personal and cultural support that extends from the time of admission, through graduation and beyond. EOP students often overcome adverse circumstances in their backgrounds to achieve excellence at Binghamton.

Anta Tall, a first-year Harpur College student from Yonkers, N.Y., is one of these exceptional EOP students. The program offers her constant guidance and support.

“Being a first-generation college and high school student — it was all new to me,” she said. “When you’re the first in your family to do something, you don’t really have anyone to turn to, so for me this is a great stepping stone.” Tall is especially appreciative of the support she receives from her counselor Joanna Cardona-Lozada and EOP Director Karima Legette. /p>

Harpur Fellows Program accepting proposals

The Harpur Fellows Program provides Harpur College undergraduates an opportunity to receive up to $4,000 to design and conduct their own community service project anywhere in the world while school is not in session (typically over summer break).

Note that there are currently Binghamton University COVID-19 travel restrictions. As long as these are in effect, all Harpur Fellows projects must be done locally, in the student's home geographic area or virtually.

Strelzyn-Witt A-OK Acts of Kindness Scholarship student nominations open

The Strelzyn-Witt A-OK Acts of Kindness Scholarship will provide a substantial scholarship to one undergraduate student each year who embodies and demonstrates a combination of fine character and making a difference in the lives of others through their kindness, compassion and caring acts. The A-OK Acts of Kindness Scholarship recognizes and rewards an undergraduate student who shows acts of kindness, not randomly, but as part of their normal way of living. Examples of acts may include: participating in an ongoing altruistic activity, going above and beyond with a service project on your own, caring for a person or animal in a significant time of need, or donating time or resources to a service or charity.

For the complete set of nomination guidelines and the application link, visit the Dean of Students website. The nomination process is now open and closes on Friday, April 16, 2021.

Summer internship funding

We all know that internships are a fantastic way to gain valuable hands-on experience, but it’s hard to commit to an unpaid summer internship when you know you need to make money, too. But what if that internship is the experience that’s going to open the doors for your future job?

The Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development recognizes this issue and administers funding to sponsor talented undergraduate and graduate students so they have financial support while completing summer internships.

Local alcohol laws survey

In an effort to gauge student awareness of local alcohol laws, and to help with ATOD Office education surrounding the topic, the Binghamton Campus and Community Coalition has put together a very brief, anonymous survey. For every 50 respondents, individuals will be entered into a drawing for a Binghamton University legacy hat. The survey is only for program assessment and not for research purposes.

Complete the online survey online.
