I hope your Spring Break went well. If you are planning your community-engaged learning and/or research for Summer and/or Fall 2024 semester please note the various funding opportunities for establishing community-based learning, teaching, and research. This includes Community Engagement Faculty Teaching and Research Enrichment Grants, and Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) Course Development Stipends. Specific details can be found below and Here. A number of faculty across campus have already been applying and are utilizing these initiatives for their teaching and research.

I would also like to point out the upcoming opportunities detailed in the newsletter below:

- CCE Community-Engaged Learning and Research Showcase. Deadline March 13, 2024.

- Two Unique Provost's Awards for Faculty Excellence in Community-Engagement 2024:

      1) Community-Engaged Teaching, Deadline March 15, 2024.

      2) Community-Engaged Scholarship, Deadline March 15, 2024.

-Ross University and Community Projects Fund. Deadline March 29, 2024.

As always, I am here to work with you one-on-one to develop or modify your community-engaged teaching and research plans for Summer and or Fall 2024 and beyond. Additionally, the CCE staff and I are all here to facilitate and strengthen community connections for sustainable and mutually beneficial community-based learning and research.

The goal for each of the CCE faculty newsletters is to share opportunities for professional development related to community-based teaching, research and scholarship. Feel free to reach out to me at any time to discuss your interest in these activities.

 

Faculty Announcements

Ongoing CCE Funding Opportunities for Establishing Community-Based Learning, Teaching, and Research

Community Engagement Faculty Teaching and Research Enrichment Grants support faculty with up to $3,000 in related project expenses for one of three tracks: 1) teaching community-engaged learning (CEL) courses, 2) course-based community-engaged research. and 3) community-based research and scholarship. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) Course Development Stipends of $1,000 are available for developing a new or revised course that integrates community-engaged learning (CEL) and successfully obtains a CEL course designation. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Community Engaged Teaching Fellows Program provides a $2,000 stipend to faculty to be part of a community of practice that guides the design and implementation of effective community engaged research, teaching and learning. 2024-2025 Fellows applications are due Friday, June 7, 2024.

Upcoming Campus Events and Opportunities

CCE Community-Engaged Learning and Research Showcase

We invite you to apply to participate. This event is an opportunity for you, your students and your community partners to exhibit the results and outcomes of your community-engaged learning or research project for students, faculty, administrators and the larger community.
The poster showcase will be held Monday, April 15 from 4-6 p.m. in Old Union Hall. The showcase is designed to display posters featuring course-based community engagement projects and community-engaged research that impact both community organizations and Binghamton University.  
The application deadline is Wednesday, March 13, 2024. A review committee will evaluate applications, and groups who are selected to participate will be notified by March 20. If you have questions, email

Provost's Awards for Faculty Excellence in Community-Engagement

Provost's Award for Faculty Excellence in Community-Engaged Teaching
Nature of the Program: The Provost's Award for Faculty Excellence in Community-Engaged Teaching honors Binghamton University faculty who have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to community engagement that helps to create meaningful change through their teaching. Community-engaged teaching involves faculty, students and community (local, regional/state, national, global) in a mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. Guidelines and further information are Here. 
Deadline: Friday, March 15, 2024.

Provost's Award for Faculty Excellence in Community-Engaged Scholarship
Nature of the Program: The Provost's Award for Faculty Excellence in Community-Engaged Teaching honors Binghamton University faculty who have demonstrated through their scholarship an exemplary commitment to community engagement that helps to create meaningful change through community-engaged research or creative activity. Community engagement describes the collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. Ross Fund
The Stephen David Ross University and Community Projects Fund is now accepting applications for the 2024 grant cycle. The fund will award approximately $28,300 total in grants to support initiatives carried out through collaborations between local nonprofit organizations and University partners. Additional information, examples of past funded projects, and the application materials are available at the link below.

The Community-Based Global Learning Collaborative Toolkit

The Collaborative has launched an open access Global Solidarity and Local Actions Toolkit, hosting conversations led by colleagues around the world, and considering critical questions around virtual Fair Trade Learning.

Resource on Civic & Community Engagement

The Primer on the Benefits and Value of Civic & Community Engagement in Higher Education (2021) is now available. It was envisioned in fall 2019 in response to a growing critique of the “social justice” goals of higher education, the urgency of it’s purpose was increased due to the challenges of 2020 – the global pandemic, racial unrest, and political polarization and threats to democracy.  This resource can be downloaded here.

AAC&U Resources for Education, Anti-Racism, and Assessment

AAC&U has made available an extensive list of online resources for strategies on teaching and civic engagement online during COVID-19, anti-racism resources, and ways to assess student civic learning.
