Welcome to a new academic year at Binghamton University. I hope everyone’s courses are off to a great start. Entering my fifth year as the CCE’s Faculty Engagement Associate has given me a great opportunity to see the amazing, engaged work that faculty across campus are doing in partnership with local community organizations. There are also still so many wonderful untapped opportunities in the region that are waiting to be explored. The ongoing pandemic continues to give us a chance to reimagine the diversity of ways in which faculty, students, and community partners can be engaged, be it virtual, in person, or a hybrid model. This reframing also gives us a unique chance to reflect on our roles, responsibilities, and actions for establishing civil discourse at a public institution through community-engaged learning and research.
I am very excited to announce the continued support of funding opportunities for establishing community-based learning, teaching, and research. This includes Community Engagement Faculty Teaching and Research Enrichment Grants, and Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) Course Development Stipends. Specific details can be found below and HERE. A number of faculty across campus have already been applying and are utilizing these initiatives for their teaching and research.
A related virtual workshop on funding opportunities will be held on Friday, September 9, 2022 from 12-1pm. Register HERE.

As always, I am here to work with you one-on-one to develop or modify your community-engaged teaching and research plans for Fall 2022 and beyond. Additionally, the CCE staff and I are all here to facilitate and strengthen community connections for sustainable and mutually beneficial community-based learning and research, whether that experience is in person or through some other means.

The goal for each of the CCE faculty newsletters is to share opportunities for professional development related to community-based teaching, research and scholarship. Feel free to reach out to me at any time to discuss your interest in these activities.

Recognizing Community-Engaged Scholarship in Academic Personnel Review

On Tuesday, September 13th, 12-1pm (EST), Collaboratory (a community-engagement database being used here at Binghamton University) is hosting a webinar on Recognizing Community-Engaged Scholarship in Academic Personnel Review. Community-engaged scholarship is an important way to fulfill the public mission of the university and facilitate social innovation. Yet, as more faculty have embraced community engagement in their research and teaching, university cultures and structures for evaluation have not changed, creating impediments and disincentives for community-engaged scholarly work. Resource on Civic & Community Engagement

The Primer on the Benefits and Value of Civic & Community Engagement in Higher Education (2021) is now available. It was envisioned in fall 2019 in response to a growing critique of the “social justice” goals of higher education, the urgency of it’s purpose was increased due to the challenges of 2020 – the global pandemic, racial unrest, and political polarization and threats to democracy.  This resource can be downloaded here.

AAC&U has made available an extensive list of online resources for strategies on teaching and civic engagement online during COVID-19, anti-racism resources, and ways to assess student civic learning.
