Every ten years, the federal government conducts a census for the purpose of counting everyone who lives in the United States. Census data is used to determine political representation and the allocation of $675 billion of federal funding annually. Responding to the census is an important act of civic empowerment, and an incomplete census count has political and financial consequences, especially for communities that are home to hard-to-count populations, including college students, people who lack stable housing, people with disabilities, young children and those who do not speak English.
Initial instructions to complete the census were mailed in mid-March, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many students left the area without responding to the census. The Census Bureau has issued guidance that college students should still respond to the census using the address where they would have been living during the spring 2020 semester, even if you returned home, will be living at a different address this fall or have graduated.
If you already responded to the census using your Binghamton address, or if you lived on campus in spring 2020, no further action is needed.
If you lived off campus in spring 2020 and you have not responded to the census using your Binghamton address, respond today at https://2020census.gov/. If you still have access to your mailed census instructions, respond using the code provided. If you no longer have access, simply enter your Binghamton address. You should coordinate with your roommates to submit one response together, but if this is not possible, you should still respond individually and include as much information as you can about everyone who was living with you in spring 2020.ÔÇï Even if your roommates also respond, the census has a process to remove duplicate responses.
Binghamton University students are important members of our community, and our census response must reflect that our area is home to thousands of students every year! A low response rate will have political and financial consequences for future students and community members for the next decade. By responding today, and reminding your friends to respond, you are doing your part to ensure our community receives fair political representation, accurate legislative redistricting, access to federal funding and more!
