Today is Election Day!

Voting absentee? Return your ballot ASAP!

Once you have received your ballot, the deadline to postmark your absentee ballot has been extended to Election Day, Nov. 3. While absentee ballots can be dropped off to any polling place, the Broome County Board of Elections encourages students to mail their ballot to out-of-county boards of elections themselves in order to save a day in the mail and better ensure your ballot is received by your home county by the deadline, Nov. 10. The Center for Civic Engagement has free stamps available in our office (UU-137) for students who need one to mail in their ballot. Campus Mail Services is open until 2:30 p.m. today. Take your ballot there and get it postmarked — do not just drop it in a mailbox.

Voting in person

The on-campus polling place (for students who are registered to vote at their on-campus address) will be held in the Events Center from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov. 3. Off-campus students can find their local polling place online.

Guidance for post-election discussions

Regardless of the outcome of the election and individual political views related to this outcome, the collective experience of the presidential election season means that some students, faculty and staff will look for spaces to process and move forward together.

To support the campus community during the post-election period, the Center for Civic Engagement has developed a general discussion guide that may be useful for those who are facilitating these conversations. Our hope is that these discussions take place in the spaces where students and others feel a sense of belonging and connection. You know these communities best and can structure conversations in ways that meet your needs. This guide is intended to provide general ideas for ground rules, discussion formats and question prompts.

Smart sharing tips & tricks

There is a lot of misinformation going around on social media, especially when it comes to the election and relevant news stories. Here at the CCE, we recognize the importance of spotting fake news and ensuring that we only share real and unbiased information. Are you sharing information that is correct when it comes to politics and elections?

Here are a few tips to keep in mind before clicking that “share” button:

  1. Check to make sure whether you are sharing a credible source of information.

  2. Has this information been fact-checked?

  3. Before sharing a picture, try a reverse search to see where else it may have appeared.

  4. Develop a critical mindset and start training yourself to pick up on key red flags when reading the news.

  5. Don’t let your emotions rule what you post. If you find yourself sharing a post primarily based on the headline, you may not have a full understanding of the situation.
