I hope your Spring 2024 semester is off to a great start. If you are planning your community-engaged learning and/or research for the Spring 2024 or Fall 2024 semester please note the various funding opportunities for establishing community-based learning, teaching, and research. This includes Community Engagement Faculty Teaching and Research Enrichment Grants, and Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) Course Development Stipends. Specific details can be found below and Here. A number of faculty across campus have already been applying and are utilizing these initiatives for their teaching and research.

As always, I am here to work with you one-on-one to develop or modify your community-engaged teaching and research plans for Spring 2024, Fall 2024 and beyond. Additionally, the CCE staff and I are all here to facilitate and strengthen community connections for sustainable and mutually beneficial community-based learning and research.

The goal for each of the CCE faculty newsletters is to share opportunities for professional development related to community-based teaching, research and scholarship. Feel free to reach out to me at any time to discuss your interest in these activities.

 

Faculty Announcements

Ongoing CCE Funding Opportunities for Establishing Community-Engaged Learning, Teaching, and Research

Community Engagement Faculty Teaching and Research Enrichment Grants support faculty with up to $3,000 in related project expenses for one of three tracks: 1) teaching community-engaged learning (CEL) courses, 2) course-based community-engaged research. and 3) community-based research and scholarship. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. 

Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) Course Development Stipends of $1,000 are available for developing a new or revised course that integrates community-engaged learning (CEL) and successfully obtains a CEL course designation. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Community Engaged Teaching Fellows Program provides a $2,000 stipend to faculty to be part of a community of practice that guides the design and implementation of effective community engaged research, teaching and learning. 2024-2025 Fellows applications are due Friday, June 7, 2024.

Upcoming Campus Events and Opportunities

The External Scholarships and Undergraduate Research Center
The Center is hosting our first-ever Women in Research Roundtable mixer event on Wednesday, January 31st from 4:30 to 630 in Old Union Hall. This event offers faculty an opportunity to encourage and support students engaged in research to consider the many broader impacts of this work and its potential value to our communities and a chance to network. We understand not everyone can stay for the full time and we welcome everyone to stay for as long as they can. Please fill out the Women in Research interest form or email agifeis1@binghamton.edu if you would like to participate as a faculty member or for more information about the event!

The Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) offers programs, events and resources for faculty/instructors interested in developing and sustaining high-impact community-based learning, teaching and research across all disciplines. This workshop will focus on funding opportunities to support this work through Community Engagement Faculty Teaching and Research Enrichment Grants, and Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) Course Development Stipends. It will also review guidance for designating CEL courses and through the Banner registration system, and tracking and showcasing faculty work through Collaboratory: An Online Community Engagement Database. Register Here.


Provost's Awards for Faculty Excellence in Community-Engagement 

Provost's Award for Faculty Excellence in Community-Engaged Teaching
Nature of the Program: The Provost's Award for Faculty Excellence in Community-Engaged Teaching honors Binghamton University faculty who have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to community engagement that helps to create meaningful change through their teaching. Community-engaged teaching involves faculty, students and community (local, regional/state, national, global) in a mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. Guidelines and further information are Here. 
Deadline: Friday, March 15, 2024.

Provost's Award for Faculty Excellence in Community-Engaged Scholarship
Nature of the Program: The Provost's Award for Faculty Excellence in Community-Engaged Teaching honors Binghamton University faculty who have demonstrated through their scholarship an exemplary commitment to community engagement that helps to create meaningful change through community-engaged research or creative activity. Community-Engaged Research and Learning Showcase, Monday, April 15, 9 am-3 pm, Old Union Hall
For faculty interested in sharing their community engaged research and learning experiences please consider presenting the work of you and your students at the Community-Engaged Learning and Research Showcase from 9 am – 3 pm in Old Union Hall. More details will be forthcoming in the next CCE Faculty Newsletter.

International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE) Practitioner-Scholar Community (PSC) program
Dr. Becca Berkey, Director of Community-Engaged Teaching & Research at Northeastern University, will lead a PSC four (4) module, asynchronous learning opportunity for a cohort of professionals working in service-learning and community engagement that seek to build their practitioner-scholar identity and capacity. The goal of this IARSLCE program is to develop the capacity of IARSLCE members in order to: 1) build their practitioner-scholar identity and 2) develop scholarly projects focused on service-learning and community engagement (SLCE) in order to support the IARSLCE mission to build the field of research and scholarship of SLCE.    Database

     Administered through the CCE, Collaboratory is the University's official   
     online database for tracking and showcasing community-engaged
     teaching and research, and public service activities. For more

The Community-Based Global Learning Collaborative Toolkit

The Collaborative has launched an open access Global Solidarity and Local Actions Toolkit, hosting conversations led by colleagues around the world, and considering critical questions around virtual Fair Trade Learning.

Resource on Civic & Community Engagement

The Primer on the Benefits and Value of Civic & Community Engagement in Higher Education (2021) is now available. It was envisioned in fall 2019 in response to a growing critique of the “social justice” goals of higher education, the urgency of it’s purpose was increased due to the challenges of 2020 – the global pandemic, racial unrest, and political polarization and threats to democracy.  This resource can be downloaded here.

AAC&U Resources for Education, Anti-Racism, and Assessment

AAC&U has made available an extensive list of online resources for strategies on teaching and civic engagement online during COVID-19, anti-racism resources, and ways to assess student civic learning.
