I hope everyone had a nice summer, challenges aside. As we go into an uncertain fall semester preparing for and managing distance learning for most of our courses, do not give up on developing community-engaged learning and research opportunities. During the spring semester there were many ways in which faculty, students and community partners managed to maintain a virtual and online commitment to community engagement. To that end, a number of resources on “Promising Practices in eService-Learning and Digital Civic Engagement” are available as part of a Summer 2020 National Campus Compact Webinar.

I am also here to work with you one-on-one to develop or modify your distance-learning community-engaged teaching and research plans for fall 2020. In addition, the CCE is maintaining on our website a list of online and virtual service opportunities.

As always, the CCE staff and I are all here to facilitate and strengthen community connections for sustainable and mutually beneficial community-based learning and research, whether that experience is in person or through some other means.

The goal for each of the CCE newsletters is to share opportunities for professional development related to community-based teaching, research and scholarship. Feel free to reach out to me at any time to discuss your interest in these activities.

Register your students to vote!

Help your students make their voices heard! CCE staff are available during your class meetings to register your students to vote, explain the absentee ballot process and answer questions about student voter rights and responsibilities. Presentations are expected to last about 15 minutes and will take place virtually via Zoom. We will walk students through the process and provide instructions on how to submit their forms.

The New York voter registration deadline for the 2020 general election is Friday, Oct. 9. Submit your requests early to help us accommodate as many classes as possible.
