Students at Binghamton University haven’t let a pandemic stop them from working with the surrounding community. Read more about what Masters of Social Work students have been doing in the community this fall.

Guidance for post-election discussions

Regardless of the outcome of the election and individual political views related to this outcome, the collective experience of the presidential election season means that some students, faculty and staff will look for spaces to process and move forward together.

To support the campus community during the post-election period, the Center for Civic Engagement has developed a general discussion guide that may be useful for those who are facilitating these conversations. Our hope is that these discussions take place in the spaces where students and others feel a sense of belonging and connection. You know these communities best and can structure conversations in ways that meet your needs. This guide is intended to provide general ideas for ground rules, discussion formats and question prompts.

United University Professions scholarships for SUNY students

SUNY students are invited to apply for annual scholarships of $3,000 offered by United University Professions, the union representing academic and professional faculty of the State University of New York.

The UUP College Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to four SUNY undergraduates. Applicants must be full-time students enrolled at SUNY state-operated schools and have a minimum grade point average of 3.75.

Full-time graduate and professional SUNY students can apply for UUP’s William Scheuerman Post Baccalaureate Scholarship. To apply, students must have at least nine credits and hold a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.95. Law and health science students must complete at least one full semester prior to applying for the scholarship.

Applicants for both scholarships must demonstrate personal and academic achievement and display a strong record of community service and a dedication to the goals and ideals of the labor movement.

The application deadline is Mar. 1, 2021. Applications are on UUP’s website.

Smart sharing tips & tricks

There is a lot of mis- and disinformation on social media, especially when it comes to the election and relevant news stories. Here at the CCE, we recognize the importance of ensuring that we only share real and unbiased information. Are you sharing information that is correct when it comes to politics and elections?

Here are a few tips to keep in mind before clicking that “share” button:

  1. Check to make sure whether you are sharing a credible source of information.

  2. Has this information been fact-checked?

  3. Before sharing a picture, try a reverse search to see where else it may have appeared.

  4. Develop a critical mindset and start training yourself to pick up on key red flags when reading the news.

  5. Don’t let your emotions rule what you post. If you find yourself sharing a post primarily based on the headline, you may not have a full understanding of the situation.
