Subject: Important information on student voting in the June 23 N.Y. Primaries

Dear student,

Are you eligible to vote in the June 23 New York primaries? This message contains important voting information to help you cast your ballot and make your voice heard!

Eligible N.Y. voters will participate in a number of primary elections on June 23, including the Democratic presidential election and various local- and state-level races.

Governor Cuomo has issued executive orders allowing all voters to request an absentee ballot using the “temporary illness” excuse and requiring Boards of Elections (BOE) to mail all eligible voters an absentee ballot application and return postage. Voters must complete the absentee request form and return it to their local BOE in order to receive a ballot.

If you are registered to vote at your Broome County address and are now at home, you will not receive the mailed absentee application. We recommend using N.Y.’s fillable PDF request form and submitting it to the BOE via email (you may request an absentee ballot electronically without a signature for the June primary elections only).

You may still choose to vote in person either during the early voting period (June 13-21) or on Election Day (June 23). Note that polling places may have changed due to COVID-19. Check with your local BOE to learn more.

If you are registered in Broome County, you may contact the Broome County Board of Elections via phone at 607-778-2172 or email at bcboe@co.broome.ny.us. Students registered in other counties should contact their local county BOE.

See below or visit our voter engagement page for relevant deadlines and forms.

Deadlines for June 23 New York presidential, local, state and federal primaries:

  • June 16: Last day to postmark or email application for absentee ballot
  • June 22: Last day to request absentee ballot in person
  • June 23: Last day to postmark absentee ballot or deliver absentee ballot in person to local BOE (by someone other than the voter)
  • Note: New York has closed primary elections. Only voters registered in a political party that is hosting a primary election are eligible to vote. Check your registration status.
