Safety Moment- Safety Shower Testing

Did you know EHS employs work study students to help with various tasks and also to perform weekly safety shower checks at ITC? Welcome Julia to the team! You may see Julia making her way around the ITC complex, she will be testing the combination eyewash/safety showers and assisting with other department tasks.

Incident Spotlight- TBAF Spill on Neck

A student working in a laboratory during normal hours was using a syringe in a fume hood to move a reagent, Tetrabutylammonium fluoride solution, from the original container to the reaction vessel. The syringe was plunged and then suddenly stopped, it did not go any further. The student then applied more pressure to force the contents past the stoppage and the needle slipped off the end of the barrel, splashing the reagent back onto the students' neck. The student activated the safety shower to wash the reagent away.

How could the accident be avoided? Can you think of any way the fume hood could have been used differently?

Lab Inspections Underway at ITC

We are in the middle of inspections so we are currently sending reports to all faculty members that maintain a lab. You may be contacted by your faculty advisor to address corrections to the lab after safety inspections. As a reminder, inspection violations must be addressed within 10 days of discovery. If you see us doing inspections feel free to stop and chat! Inspections are a great time to ask us any questions you may have in your lab.
