Proof is a play that follows Catherine, a gifted young mathematician who had to leave her education to take care of her father as he struggled with mental illness in the years before his passing. The play investigates Catherine's relationship to living in a world without her father and trying to navigate continuing to explore her passions, while also dealing with her own anxieties surrounding mental health.

I have also included below a description of the different characters in this play.

Character Breakdown

Catherine: Gifted mathematician who left her college education to look after her father as he suffered through his mental illness in the time before he passed. She fears the possibility of her inheriting her father's mental illness as she works through the problems of her own life.

Claire: Claire's sister. Lives in NYC maintaining a successful career and a serious relationship. She is worried about her sister and has come back home to help with preparations for his funeral.

Hal: One of Robert's old students from University who has asked Catherine if he can dig through her father's old journals and see if there was anything important that he left behind. He is a PhD student and looked up to Robert very fondly.

Robert: Father of Catherine and Claire. Robert was a brilliant mathematician who had completely shifted the field of mathematics by the time he was twenty-two. Towards the end of Robert's life, he began to struggle more and more with delusions.
