How does pesticide use become normalized and how do government
agencies contribute to that process? This talk sheds light on these questions
by examining New Zealand’s 2002-2004 urban aerial pesticide spraying

campaign to eliminate an invasive moth. Because they occur in densely-
populated areas, urban pesticide spraying operations are particularly

important for understanding how governments seek to manage public

resistance to pesticide use.

This talk will illuminate how government agencies endeavour to control public
resistance through tactics of knowledge management, including: undone
science, suppression, omission, denial, downplaying and distraction.
