It's the biggest event of the semester so don't miss out!
11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Binghamton University is a HEARTSafe campus and this event lets members of the Binghamton University community learn compression-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). This will allow for early recognition of sudden cardiac arrest, knowledge of what to do when cardiac arrest occurs, training of community members in CPR and an increase in public access to defibrillation.
HEARTSafe Campuses are recognized by the National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation(NCEMSF) and the American Heart Association (AHA). Harpur's Ferry goal, since2013, is to maintain and enhance Binghamton's participation in this effort to, "encourage and promote community awareness of the potential for saving the lives of sudden cardiac arrest victims through the use of CPR". Educating and empowering both students and faculty is a vital link in the chain of survival. Effective hands-only CPR and defibrillation performed by a bystander, prior to the arrival of EMS, is vital to the chances of survival.
What exactly does it mean for Binghamton University to be HeartSafe? The HEARTSafe Campus accreditation is a joint effort with the National Collegiate EMS Foundation and the American Heart Association. The goals of the HEARTSafe program are to promote community awareness of sudden cardiac arrest, train community members in hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and to increase public access to defibrillation. In addition, a HEARTSafe Campus ensures early access to advanced life support and engages in preventative cardiovascular healthcare activities.
What does this accreditation mean? Binghamton University being a HEARTSafe campus means that Binghamton is a leader in the community. Training programs will continue to develop and expand as a greater portion of our student body and faculty become trained in CPR.. In addition, the Broome County Health Department in partnership with the Susquehanna Regional EMS Council recently released the Southern Tier HEARTSafe Community program, with which Harpur's Ferry and Binghamton University have been integrally involved since its inception.
What can you do? In less than 30 minutes anyone can learn the skills that it takes to save someone. Look for HEARTSafe and CPR training programs and participate in them with your friends and family. Learn CPR and make a difference.
