A new bail reform law in New York State, which took effect on January 1 and effectively ends the practice of imposing cash bail on non-violent and misdemeanor defendants, has sparked fierce debate in recent weeks about the power of the courts, the rights of the accused, and the socio-economic inequalities in our criminal justice system. Proponents of the new law celebrate it as a much needed corrective to a system that disproportionately jails minority and low-income defendants who cannot afford bail, while critics worry that it prevents prosecutors from keeping potential re-offenders out of communities.

The Pre-Law Advising Office is hosting a workshop on this new measure (and on criminal justice reform generally), led by Broome County Assistant District Attorney Eric Gartenman. Mr. Gartenman heads his office's Special Victims Unit, where he has seen firsthand the implementation of bail reform. Participants will engage in an active conversation about the different sides of the issue, weigh its effects, and debate further steps that might be taken in reforming the criminal justice system.

This workshop presents an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in public service, criminal justice, or the law generally. Any and all are invited to attend, but please note that space is limited. Please RSVP to attend.
