For centuries, Spain has served as a cultural hub for the three major monolithic religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. In particular, the influence and history of Islam in Spain has had a profound impact on the culture of Spain. This influence is still apparent in contemporary Spanish culture. Students will get the opportunity to explore three unique Spanish cities: Madrid, Toledo, and Granada. Each one has their own unique sites and experiences, from their monuments and architecture, to their food and art.

Starting with the Muslim presence in Spain in the territory of Al-Andalus, students will learn how the coexistence of three religions and cultures and the interactions between Christians, Jews and Muslims for almost eight centuries created a very unique culture and civilization in Spain that had a significant impact on the European Renaissance. During travel to Spain, students will visit historical sites such as cathedrals, ancient mosques and synagogues. Students will also have the opportunity to see some of the most famous museums of the country, like the Museo del Prado and the Museo de Arte Moderno Reina Sofía in Madrid. They will also walk around the streets of Madrid, Granada and Toledo to discover their respective artistic and cultural legacies, and their impact on contemporary Spain.

This trip will give the students a unique occasion to think about and discuss subjects related to recent Spain in a reflective and dynamic environment. This program is intended to complement the learning offered in class during the semester and will facilitate students' discovery of Spain's rich cultural history.
