Francisco Ramírez Cuéllar addresses "The Legacy of Genocide and Human Rights Challenges in Colombia's New Political Period."

Francisco Ramírez, is a Colombian lawyer, a labor and human rights activist, and author of The Profits of Extermination: Big Mining in Colombia (2005). Ramírez headed the Colombian miners union Sintraminercol and is a prominent member of the human rights team of the CUT (Central Unitaria de Trabajadores), Colombia's largest labor federation. He has led efforts to improve conditions for Colombian workers in the mining and petrochemicals sectors. Having survived eight assassination attempts for his trade union activism and his role in bringing lawsuits against multinational mining companies responsible for human rights abuses in Colombia, he is a tireless advocate for trade union leaders targeted by state and paramilitary violence. Currently, along with forging international solidarity networks to support persecuted labor and community activists, he is working with Colombia's newly elected progressive government to rewrite the country's mining code.
