Unraveling the Big Lie: Participatory Disinformation and Its Threat to Democracy

The next talk in our Futures of American Democracy series focuses on research to understand the spread of disinformation about the 2020 Election. It considers the Election Integrity Partnership — a multi-stakeholder collaboration that addressed mis-and disinformation about the 2020 U.S. election in (near) real-time through rapid response data science – and Starbird's social media analyses to show how the "Big Lie" took shape on social media platforms. She considers the participatory nature of this campaign as well as reflects on the broader threat of disinformation to democracy.
