The US is the only democracy in the world that does not select its president or prime minister by popular vote. Instead the president is chosen by the electoral college. This talk looks at why the constitutional framers created the electoral college, how it works, and whether it should be retained, replaced, or revamped.          
                           
David Schultz is a professor in the departments of political science and legal studies at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. He is also a professor of law at the University of Minnesota. He has bachelor's and master's degrees in political science and philosophy, a JD and LLM in law, a PhD in political science, and a master's degree in astronomy. He's a three-time Fulbright scholar and author of more than 35 books and 200 articles on various aspects of American politics, election law, the media and politics.
