I first learned about math art in 1978 from Helaman Ferguson when he was a math professor at Brigham Young University. He became a mentor to me, and an inspiration for all the years since then. I will talk about other influences on my attempts to create math art, most especially the help I got from Prof. Jim Stark, who let me use the sculpture studio resources to make cast bronze and iron sculptures. I will show examples of my artwork and explain how they were made. I have used the computer design program, Rhino3D, to make math jewelry as well as desktop size models by 3D printing. Most recently I used Rhino3D to make models of tessellations of 3-space (Euclidean and hyperbolic) which have been of great use in an ongoing research project with Binghamton colleagues. I gave a series of four 2-hour talks on my math art to the Lyceum a few years ago, so a one-hour talk is barely enough to scratch the surface of this topic. We will see how far I get.
