Join NYC-based Cuban dance artist Danys Perez (La Mora) for a masterclass that explores various forms of Afro-Cuban dance and music traditions. This event is organized by Theatre faculty artist Heidy Batista, who teaches a course in Latin Dance Styles each semester. Participants will have the opportunity to explore, through movement, the Afro-Cuban traditions derived from the various African ethnic groups that arrived in Cuba, including the Yoruba, Bantu and Dahomean groups, while performing to live music. In line with the theme "Deep Roots, Broad Horizons," we believe there is no better way to delve into the rich heritage of this fascinating culture to expand our knowledge and understanding. Everyone is welcome to join this platform for exploration, learning and expressing themselves through body language. The class content will allow participants to connect with the history, roots and cultural aesthetics of Afro-Cuban traditions, discovering a vast universe of ancestral knowledge that remains alive and in dialogue with our contemporary world. Please wear comfortable clothing and either socks or go barefoot.
