Summer Course-based Research Opportunities

Today, students need to have research experience, so they can be competitive for NSF-REU, EXROP and other types of national research fellowships and subsequently for graduate school, medical school and so forth. Although our summer research programs are similar to a NSF-REU experience, it differs in that it provides a stepped, multi-mentored, team-based experience that is ideal for students with little, if any, research experience. Last year the summer research streams were Ecological Genetics, Biogeochemistry, and Clean Energy, with rising sophomores, juniors and seniors – all STEM majors with aspirations for medical school or graduate school but as yet no research experience. They completed a summer research project of publishable quality, and all demonstrated substantial personal and professional growth.

The SRI and FtRI programs are similar to the First-year Research Immersion (FRI). All of our programs provide undergraduates with training and experience conducting real research in research streams designed by faculty recognized around the world for their work on important problems. Both programs will take students step by step from learning to ask a research question to presenting their research to the public. Students will develop the knowledge and skills in these programs that will allow them to continue with advanced research after they complete the program.

For summer 2023, SRI will be running research in our Clean Energy (chemistry and physics) stream. Participants will spend the summer conducting research on these topics and gain valuable experience and knowledge. SRI will run for ten weeks and consist of two courses (Research Stream I & II courses, 8 credits total). Opportunities after this program include continued research in faculty laboratories, industry internships and national fellowships.

Additionally, we plan to run FtRI with our research streams yet to be determined. Participants will spend the first summer session conducting collaborative research. FtRI will run for 5 weeks during Summer Session 1 and consist of one course (Research Stream I course, 4 credits). Following successful completion of FtRI, student researchers will be enrolled in the fall FRI course (Research Stream II course, 4 credits) to complete the FRI program alongside current FRI students in the same research streams.
