The picture above features an illustration of a horse in motion at the top and a saddle at the bottom. Between these two images, there’s an inspiring quote by John Wayne: “courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway.”

As you saddle up and ride into the new school year.

Remember, “Life isn’t about getting it just right. It’s about loving myself through all the very human, imperfect moments of each day.” (A Year of Self-Love)

Here are some tips to help you get through the 3 pm slump:

If there’s one part of our workday that can slow us down, it’s the dreaded 3 pm slump.

We reach our most tired phase of the day between 1 and 3 pm…which is coincidentally when we also reach for things like potato chips and candy.

Research has shown that we tend to feel this way because of our natural circadian rhythms.

It’s tempting to grab a strong coffee, but this can play havoc with our sleep, so here are a few healthy alternatives to try instead!

Take a microbreak - Stretch, go for a quick walk, or jump up and down on the spot to get your brain and body moving again.

Snack attack - Reach for snacks that combine protein and healthy fats — like nuts, greek yogurt, or an apple with almond butter. These will give you a boost and keep your energy levels steady.

Hydrate - Dehydration can cause you to feel drowsy and unfocused. Track your water intake during the day to make sure you’re getting enough.

Pump up the volume - Make a mid-afternoon playlist of upbeat songs that you can switch on when your brain starts to switch off.

What’s your favorite way to beat the mid-afternoon energy dip? Let us know in the comments!

Self-Love Action for the Weekend: “Today, and every day in this new year, let me love myself through all the very human, imperfect moments. I can find gentle humor in my humility or offer myself compassion when I’m cranky.” (A year of Self-Love)
