School of the Arts "Tips for the Real World" part 2 series

School of the Arts is teaming up with the Fleishman Center again to bring a series of "Tips for the Real World" panels. Students can learn from School of the Arts faculty members about their rich professional experiences in art and culture, festivals, and the built environment industry, and gain practical advice and tangible ways to start a career in the arts.

Featured panelists and topics Include:
- Tomo Nishikawa, Chair and Professor Of Cinema: Navigating Film Festival Applications
Nishikawa has shown his films at numerous film festivals, including Berlinale, Hong Kong International Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, London Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Singapore International Film Festival, and Toronto International Film Festival. He will share his experience and provide tips for submitting to film festivals.

- Colin Lyons, Associate Professor of Art and Design: Art residences learning outcomes
Colin Lyons will discuss how artist residencies allow emerging artists to foster connections across the globe, travel to new environments, give uninterrupted time to work, and offer otherwise inaccessible facilities. He will discuss recent experiences in studio-based and unconventional residency destinations, including remote islands, arctic sailing vessels, and historic mining towns. He will also give insights on how to identify suitable residency programs, some tips for applying, and how to make the most of these opportunities once you're there.

- Julia Walker, Associate Professor of Art History: Built environment industry learning outcomes
Julia Walker is an Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Art History, as well as the Director of the Architecture + Urban Studies major. Her research centers on modern and contemporary architecture, particularly the evolution of modernist ideas in current practice. She is currently authoring a book on women who studied and practiced architecture before leaving or being marginalized from the field. Students interested in architecture, planning, preservation, and advocacy will find Julia’s experience and insight invaluable. She will offer insights on portfolio preparation, crafting a statement of purpose, and leveraging a liberal arts education to strengthen applications for design programs.
