Are you curious about leveraging your research experience without being confined to a lab? Alumna Maggie Fox ‘18 participated in the first cohort of the First Year Research Immersion Program, which paved the way for her to work in a lab and travel abroad doing research. After earning her PhD from UCLA in materials science and engineering, Maggie was searching for ways to blend her passion for research with her desire to build a community. Now, as an Associate Editor for Nature Communications, Maggie helps influence the direction of science publishing. If you’re interested in science, writing, and research, this is the Skills Lab for you!

Skills Lab: Science Beyond the Bench
Friday, Sept. 27 | 1:00-2:30 p.m. | UU133A
Registration is required and space is limited. Register in Handshake!

Maggie will guide students through her academic and professional journey to help them discover the intersection between their range of interests. Throughout her career, Maggie has also had experience with sustainability, community outreach, DEI and policy work.

What to expect:
Practice making strategic editorial decisions and critically assess academic writing.
Learn to communicate thoughts and decisions clearly to diverse audiences.
Gain insights on how to identify areas of interest in a given community.
Explore a career that blends writing and research.

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the interdisciplinary connections between research, writing, and science, and develop important analytical skills needed to succeed in the field of science publishing.
