The BU EcoBlitz is a community-science event to collect ecological data at a given location and time. At our last EcoBlitz event, 200 participants collected 1,162 observations over two weeks! The highlight of the event is our Kickoff Event, which will be held on Saturday, April 13th, from 10 AM to 3 PM. The 2024 EcoBlitz will run from April 13th until May 4th.

The event’s main goal is to unite students, classes, researchers, conservation organizations, and community members to document local biodiversity and the environment on campus! We will use the free nature identification app iNaturalist to collect data during this event.

The EcoBlitz event features tours with naturalists and scientists to collect data and a variety of nature-themed activities for all age groups hosted by student groups, research groups, and community partners. Our Kickoff event will have tours and activity or information tables, and opportunities to log data. Participation in logging data and tours may also happen anytime during the EcoBlitz.

If you would like to receive general information about this event or about being involved in the event by volunteering to help plan or help at the Kickoff event, or if you are interested in hosting a table, running a nature tour, or having your class be involved, please fill out this interest form: {BU EcoBlitz 2024 - Sign-Up Form}.

At the last event, we had 28 tables from student groups, classes, researchers and lab groups, and local parks, including Binghamton University Sustainability Hub, Broome County Parks, National Audubon Student Conservation Chapter, Cornell Herpetological Society, BUgs!, Wild Waders (both biology graduate student lab groups), Ross Park Zoo.

Topics and activities ranged from tours with local scientists and naturalists to collect ecological data, insect collection and identification tours and activities, scavenger hunts, crafts and activities for kids, and many more!
