International Mother Language Day is observed annually on February 21st to promote linguistic and cultural diversity around the world. In 1952, the poignant connection to language and identity manifested in a historic event—the Language Movement in Bangladesh. People valiantly protested demanding the recognition of Bangla as their mother tongue. The sacrifice of those who laid down their lives for the right to speak in their mother language echoes in the very essence of this day. It is a reminder that language is not just a medium; it is a fierce expression of identity, a declaration of existence. Hence, it was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1999 to recognize the importance of preserving and celebrating languages.
