SAPB Presents: An Evening with Dr. Yusef Salaam of the Exonerated Central Park Five
Registration
Details
Dr. Salaam is a member of the exonerated 'Central Park Five', a group of young black and Latino men falsely convicted of the attack and rape of a young woman in 1989. Their convictions were vacated in 2002 after spending between 7 and 13 years of their lives behind bars. Earlier that year the unidentified DNA in the Central Park Jogger Case, unlinked to any of the five, met its owner, a convicted murderer and serial rapist who confessed to the horrific crimes. Their stories have recently been depicted in Netflix's, 'When They See Us', a powerful mini-series produced by Ava Duvernay and Oprah Winfrey.
Following his release, Dr. Salaam has committed himself to advocating and educating people on the issues of false confessions, police brutality, and misconduct in America's criminal justice system. This work has led him to receive the President's Lifetime Achievement Award from President Barack Obama and later be appointed to the board of the Innocence Project.
